Cleaning tips for furniture

The wooden furniture is fairly easy to maintain. The dust and dirt can be removed with a simple dust cloth. But drops of water should not remain on its surface as it stains. For a proper care of the furniture there  are a lot of homemade solutions. Here are some of them:

  • Very dark wood can be rubbed with oak bark powder wrapped in gauze, and the small scratches  will disappear immediately.
  • Scratches on the light-colored wood can be removed with white petrolatum or a mixture made of 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of oil.
  • For darker wood is recommended a mixture made of red wine and oil.
  • Open scratches on wood can be removed with white or beige shoe polish cream. On the dark brown furniture you should apply black shoe polish.
  • Water stains on furniture disappear by rubbing them with toothpaste. On stubborn stains add a small amount of sodium bicarbonate. Then polish with a soft cloth.
  • Wax candles must be softened first with a hair dryer, then absorbed with paper towels. Finally wipe the surface with a mix made of water and vinegar.
  • Traces of pressed wood can be removed by placing a damp cloth on them. After a few hours  will disappear.
  • Traces of glass left on wooden tables can be removed with a mixture made of 1 teaspoon of butter  and 1 teaspoon of mayonnaise and a small amount of cigarette ash.
  • Walnut wood color and texture are better valued when furniture is treated occasionally with milk.
  • Spots on the treated wood can be removed with this old home remedy: 1 tablespoon of Vaseline oil and 2 teaspoons of turpentine oil. Mix the ingredients with a fork in a small bowl. Pour a few drops of this solution on a soft cloth and rub the spot.
  • Dirty mahogany should be washed first with soap and water, using a soft brush, then wipe with a dry cloth. But if stained, you need a special solution: 100 ml alcohol, 2 tablespoons flax-seed oil and 2 tablespoons red wine. First rub  well the stains with alcohol, then wipe quickly with a dry cloth. Mix the oil with wine and polish the treated areas.
